California Bill to Phase out the Non-therapeutic Use of Antibiotics in Livestock Moves Forward

California Senate Bill SB 416 has moved out of the Senate Food and Agriculture Committee by a 3-1 vote and passed the Senate Education Committee by a vote of 5-2. If enacted, the bill would phase out the use of "non-therapeutic" antibiotics in food-producing animals in California.

The bill would initially prohibit the purchase of meat and poultry products for the state's school lunch program from animals having received non-therapeutic antibiotics after 2011 and all animals raised for human consumption in the state by 2015.
