Canadian Producers and Veterinarians Focus on PCVAD

Veterinarians and producers join the Canadian government in an effort to control Porcine Circovirus Associated Diseases (PCVAD). This effort represents Phase-2 of a $76 million program announced in 2007 designed to help swine producers address production issues associated with PCVAD.

Under Phase-1, launched in the fall of 2007 and made retro-active to April, 2006, producers who had herds impacted by PCVAD were made eligible for reimbursement of a portion of the costs of diagnosing the disease and vaccinating herds against it. Phase-1 delivered $25million directed at offsetting the cost of the inoculation program instituted in an effort to control a severe outbreak of the disease.

Phase-2 will provide $40million over the next two years to develop and implement biosecurity best management practices to mitigate spread of the virus. The goal is to create a national standard of biosecurity practices targeting containment or eradication of PCVAD. This initiative will be administered by the Canadian Swine Health Board.
