Position Announcement: Allen Leman Chair in Swine Health

Position: The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Population Medicine Department announces the recruitment for the Allen Leman Chair in Swine Health. The Leman Chair, the most prestigious position in swine science at the University of Minnesota, will be filled by a leader in swine health and infectious diseases. The university seeks an individual with outstanding credentials and an established record as a leader in the application of science-based medicine for the improvement of swine health. The position will be a 75-100%, non-tenure track faculty position with an initial appointment of up to five years and annually renewable thereafter. The appointment will be at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor, dependent upon qualifications and experience consistent with collegiate and university policy.

Requirements: Candidates must have a DVM, VMD, or an equivalent degree from a foreign university, an advanced graduate degree and significant experience and reputation in swine health and infectious disease epidemiology. The applicant must exhibit a passion for swine production, be an excellent communicator, bring a vision for the future of the swine industry and veterinary medicine's role in that future, and have an excellent capacity for interacting with people and building collaborative, highly functional teams. Significant stature in the swine industry, authority in their respective field, experience with disease elimination programs across multiple agents and an appreciation for the breadth of issues facing the global swine industry are desired.

Duties: Applied research will be a major component of this position. Duties will also include addressing strategic issues related to swine health on a global, national and regional basis. The successful candidate may play an important facilitator's role within the swine industry, research, DVM education, producer education, and continuing education for practitioners. The position will leave great latitude for the individual to define their focus and activities, and will include significant interaction with the swine industries of Minnesota and North America. An important area of emphasis identified by stakeholders is the regional monitoring and control/elimination of economically significant diseases in an effort to improve the overall health of the Minnesota swine herd. At a time of major restructuring of the nation's swine industry, the Leman Chair will have an opportunity to significantly influence how people from all segments of the industry successfully adapt to the changes they face. The person who fills the Chair will be encouraged to play the role of catalyst for collaboration between the University of Minnesota's Swine Center, its swine group and the Swine Disease Eradication Center.

Salary/Rank: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Academic Preparation: Candidate must have a DVM, VMD or an equivalent degree from a foreign University and an advanced degree.

Desired Academic Preparation: A PhD degree in the biomedical sciences and demonstrated postdoctoral research experience are preferred.

Minimum Experience: Applicant must have significant experience and reputation in an area of swine health and infectious disease epidemiology and disease elimination.

Desired Experience: Demonstrated experience within the global swine industry, excellent communication skills, a vision for the future of the swine industry and its interaction with swine veterinarians.
