FSIS to Discuss Label Claims on Meat and Poultry
October 8, 2008 —
The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) will conduct a public meeting to discuss it policy on the use of animal raising claims on meat and poultry products.
FSIS approves animal raising claims, such as the use of antibiotics, in the labeling of meat and poultry products if the animal production information submitted with the label application supports the claims being made and the claim is truthful and not misleading.
Concerns have been raised regarding the accuracy of some label claims on poultry products recently which led FSIS to review its policies ensuring that these claims are, in fact, truthful and not misleading.
The public meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at L'Enfant Plaza Hotel, 480 L'Enfant Plaza, SW, Washington, D.C. 20024. Additional information can be found on FSIS' web site.
