AASV Meets with FDA to Discuss Injectable Iron

Members of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians' (AASV) Executive Committee met with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 17th to discuss the continued shortage of injectable iron dextran.

The FDA recognizes the importance of supplemental iron to the swine industry and has been very cooperative working with the AASV to allow the importation of injectable iron products manufactured in Canada. During the meeting, the FDA representatives indicated that they expect 200mg iron dextran manufactured in the U.S. to be available by mid-July. Until then, they will continue to allow the importation of iron dextran manufactured at approved facilities in Canada.

The FDA estimates that enough iron should be available to meet the needs of all U.S. producers provided producers only purchase enough to meet their immediate needs and not hoard supplies.
