Quebec Producers to get PMWS Aid in February

The $17.5 million aid package for Quebec's PMWS-hit pig farmers will start next month. The province announced plans for direct aid and interest-free loans.

The aid package was announced on December. It will be in two parts. The first will be direct aid for PMWS-affected hog feeding operations, to be delivered automatically to farmers signed up under the federal and provincial ag income stabilization programs, CAIS (called PCSRA in Quebec) and ASRA, for the program year 2006.

The support will cover up to two-thirds of the value of the pigs affected by post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). La Financiere agricole, the provincial ag lending agency, will oversee the program and already prepared to roll out the support. The compensation is expected to be paid out in February. The second part of the program takes is a 24-month interest-free period on loans of up to $50,000 for pig producers whose herds were hit by PMWS in 2006. A 12-month interest-free period will be offered to hog farmers who took part in the provincial aid program for PMWS in 2005.

Producers looking for more details on the loan program can find it at local Financiere agricole office, says the provincial government.
