UK FMD Outbreak Update - October 10, 2007

  • Oct. 10, 2007 - there have been a total of 8 confirmed infected premises since the outbreak began on Aug. 3rd. The latest case was confirmed on Sept. 30th. All cases have been in the general vicinity of the original outbreak and the latest epidemiology report concludes that the disease is unlikely to spread outside of the current protection zones.
  • Oct. 9 - The Scottish government has announced plans to slaughter 250,000 "light lambs" to avoid starvation resulting from lack of pasture and inability to export to the usual European market. Farmers will be paid £15 ($30) to send the lambs to an abattoir.
  • Oct. 8 - DEFRA announces £12.5 million ($25.5 million) for farmers in England affected by the FMD outbreak.
