AAVMC Names Executive Director

The Association of American Veterinary Colleges (AAVMC) has named Marguerite Pappaioanou, DVM, MPVM, PhD, as its new executive director, effective November 1. Dr. Pappaioanou now holds a joint appointment as Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology in the School of Public Health and College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

Prior to her academic appointments at The University of Minnesota, Dr. Pappaioanou held numerous positions at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most recently Acting Deputy Director in the Office of Global Health in 2004, and Associate Director for Science and Policy from 1999-2004. She co-coordinated CDC's international response to the SARS and Avian flu outbreaks in 2003 and served as the point of contact at CDC for Department of Health and Human Service activities in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Dr. Pappaioanou earned her bachelor's and DVM degrees at Michigan State University, and her MPVM and doctoral degrees from the University of California, Davis. She is a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, and serves as an Associate Editor of the Emerging Infectious Disease Journal.

Dr. Pappaioanou succeeds Dr. Lawrence E. Heider, who will retire October 30; he served as executive director since 2002.
