Oregon passed a measure Thursday to phase out use of sow gestation stalls, making it the first U.S. state to do so by action of a state legislature. Arizona and Florida both banned the stalls as a result of voter ballot initiatives.
The Oregon measure takes effect in 2013, providing producers with a six-year window to transition to other methods of animal husbandry. Oregon is currently home to about 4,000 breeding sows.
