Two Wisconsin Swine Herds Confirmed PRV Positive

A second Clark County Wisconsin swine herd was confirmed Pseudorabies (PRV) positive by the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory on April 23rd.

This 20-animal outdoor herd, located in Loyal and outside the five-mile radius established around the first infected herd, will be depopulated following the recent test in which 11 animals (out of 14 tested) were confirmed positive. Another five-mile quarantine zone will be established around this second herd and additional testing will be undertaken.

The second herd consists of Eurasian pigs and had recently shared a boar with the original positive herd located in Greenwood, WI. It is unclear which herd was the initial source of the infection.

Quarantines will be delivered in the next few days to farms with swine within five miles of this second herd. A quarantine stops movement of live hogs onto or off the farms, except for slaughter. Michigan is the first, and so far only, state to prohibit the importation of swine from Wisconsin.

Herds on these premises will be tested for pseudorabies by May 15 and quarantines will be released for farms where herds test negative. Swine within two miles of the infected herd will be retested 30-60 days after the infected farm is cleaned and disinfected. It's not yet known how many swine herds there are in this five-mile area.
