Position Announcement: Diagnostic Center Director

The Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH), College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications from outstanding individuals for the position of Diagnostic Center Director. The DCPAH is a premier, state-of-the-art veterinary diagnostic laboratory, accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), occupying a new 152,000 square foot facility at Michigan State University. The DCPAH processes 220,000 case submissions annually and offers over 700 diagnostic tests in order to provide assistance to veterinarians and animal owners in identifying, tracking, and addressing animal and public health issues.

Applicants should possess excellent administrative, management and entrepreneurial skills, in keeping with the DCPAH commitment to service, research, and teaching. The Director is expected to uphold and facilitate the DCPAH mission and vision, including promotion of the standards of excellence within laboratory sections and adherence to AAVLD quality principles.

Excellent communication skills are required, as the successful candidate will interact closely with DCPAH faculty, technical staff and diagnostic center customers, as well as with colleagues in the College of Veterinary Medicine and University administration. In addition, the successful candidate will represent the DCPAH in interactions with state agencies such as the Michigan Department of Agriculture, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Michigan Department of Community Health; animal industry groups and agricultural organizations; and, national agencies such as the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Office Internationale des Epizooties (OIE). The Director will also be actively engaged with national and state associations such the AAVLD, the United States Animal Health Association (USAHA), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), etc.

The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and serves on the Dean's Cabinet. The candidate must possess a DVM or equivalent veterinary medical degree. A PhD and/or Board certification in a laboratory-related specialty are desirable. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for full or limited (academic institution) licensure in the state of Michigan.

Salary and appointment: The position is a full time annual appointment in the tenure system, health programs, or fixed term appointment system. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting date: October 1, 2007 (date negotiable).
