Position Announcement: NADC Swine Respiratory Disease Project

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Respiratory Diseases of Livestock Research Unit, Ames, Iowa is seeking two innovative, dynamic and experienced scientists. The unit conducts basic and applied research on the diagnosis, prevention, and pathogenesis, of bacterial and viral diseases in food-producing animals.

Research involves a variety of techniques associated with bacteriology, virology, cellular and molecular biology, epidemiology, immunology and pathology. The Unit's research is multidisciplinary, with an increased emphasis on new technologies.

The porcine position includes priority pathogens such as Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Haemophilus parasuis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Streptococcus suis. Announcement No. ARS-X6W-0418.

The ruminant position includes priority pathogens such as Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni, and Mycoplasma bovis. Announcement No. ARS-X6W-0419.

Veterinary Medical Officer/Microbiologist duties include planning, conducting, and reporting research both as a team member and as an independent investigator in studies leading to an understanding of host-pathogen interactions and potential methods for disease intervention. Knowledge of bacteriology, virology, cellular and molecular biology, epidemiology, immunology and pathology and /or veterinary medicine and a demonstrable research skill are required. Salary range is from $63,417 to $98,041 (GS-12/13).

U.S. citizenship is required. Applicants must meet basic education requirements as described in each announcement, plus directly related Ph.D. and/or professional research experience. Incumbents will be expected to publish and present research results.
