Animal Studies Should be Subject to Additional Oversight

According to a letter to the editor of the British Medical Journal, clinical studies using animals should be subject to a level of oversight similar to that required for human studies.

The letter, submitted by Alexander Spiers a retired professor of medicine, recommends the formation of animal subject committees to approve drug trials in animals. The committees would be tasked with assessing sample size, randomization of treatments, blinding of observers, selection of animal subjects, statistical methods, and elimination of biases that may be introduced by the pharmaceutical company that sponsors the work.
