Classical Swine Fever in Nicaragua

Animal health officials in Nicaragua are reporting an outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in a swine herd in Granada, Los Jirones, Diria.
In a report to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), officials at the Central Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have confirmed an outbreak of CSF in a herd of 3 pigs. All 3 exhibited clinical signs consistent with the disease, which began on December 12, 2006. CSF was last reported in Nicaragua on June 13, 2005.
Officials have begun ring vaccination in a 6 km radius around the outbreak. An epidemiological investigation by a team of official veterinarians is in progress to find out the origin of the outbreak. Control measures including quarantines, vaccination, modified stamping out and treatment of affected animals have been undertaken.
