Grassley working to prevent horse slaughter bill in Senate

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill banning horse slaughter earlier this year but it has not come up in the Senate. Iowa Senator Charles Grassley sent a letter to the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee on October 26, asking him to block any effort by other members to attach measures related to the prevention of horse slaughter in the United States.

"I think it'll be a first step towards other limits of slaughtering domestic animals in the U.S. and will change the face of agriculture," Grassley said.

Grassley says the issue is apt to come up in the lame duck session of Congress which begins November 13.

"I want to keep this issue in the forefront with my colleagues," Grassley said. "So we don't have a provision added as sometimes happens on appropriation bills in the dark of night."
