Researchers Recommend Limiting use of DDGS in Swine Diets

The increased use of feed grains in the production of ethanol has swine producers concerned about the availability and cost of grains for use in swine diets. As a result, producers are considering the inclusion of ethanol by-products such as Dried Distillers Grains (DDGS) in the formulation of swine rations. Researchers with the University of Alberta are cautioning against overusing these products.

The DDGS contain concentrations of fiber, fat and protein. The high concentration of fiber makes beef and dairy cattle the primary market. However, the by-product's low cost compared to rising grain prices make its use attractive to swine producers as well. Researchers, however, express concern regarding the digestible nutrient content and subsequent effect on performance. In addition, if using DDGS derived from corn there is also the concern over the amount of corn oil present. High levels of corn oil may affect carcass quality and feed intake.

Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra, University of Alberta feed industry research chair, also expresses concern regarding the variability in the quality of the DDGS. Dr. Zijlstra notes that the variability in the feed grains being used in ethanol production and the range in conditions encountered during the production process may result in variability in the final product.
