FDA Approves use of Bacteriophages on Meat and Poultry

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of six bacteria-killing viruses (bacteriophages) to combat food-borne microbes on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products.

The bacteriophages, which target Listeria monocytogenes, can be sprayed on the products just prior to packaging. A Baltimore, MD company, Intralytix, Inc., manufactures the product known as LMP 102 and plans to seek approval for similar products to target E. coli O157 and Salmonella in the next 12 months.
