U.S. Pork Exports Continue to Climb

According to an analysis reported in the Daily Livestock Report of June data recently released by the USDA's Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS), pork exports for the first half of 2006 are 15.5 percent larger than in 2005.

Japan remained the largest importer of American pork products in spite of an 11.3% decline in imports so far this year. Mexico, the second largest importer of U.S. pork, continues to show significant market growth with exports up 30% in the first six months. Exports to Mexico have doubled since 2003. Other international growth markets include Korea and Russia with exports increasing 59% and 157% respectively according to FAS statistics.

The value of U.S. pork exports has doubled since 2000 from slightly over $600 million to just over $1.2 billion and continues to rise, up 6.0% through June of this year. Japan contributes approximately $500 million of that value, with Mexico and Canada second at approximately $200 million each.
