Intradermal Swine Vaccination Approved in The Netherlands

Two Intervet swine vaccines, Porcilis Begonia and Porcilis PRRS for PRV and PRRS respectively, have received approval for intradermal administration using Intervet's IDAL Vaccinator.

The IDAL Vaccinator, already in use in several countries, is a needle-free device that delivers 0.2 ml of vaccine intradermally. The company lists several advantages of this system over conventional injection techniques:

• No invasion of muscle tissue, so no damage to the meat
• No danger of broken needles remaining in skin or muscle
• Vaccination is not confined to a restricted site
• No local reactions
• No systemic reactions
• Animals are not stressed by an injection
• Ease of use for the operator

The battery-operated device is officially registered for use with specific products with a specific dose volume and is advertised to deliver up to 500 doses before needing to be recharged. It is also equipped with automatic rinsing and vaccine recognition systems to control delivery pressure.
