UK Welfare Council calls for Enhanced Welfare Labeling of Pork

The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) in Great Britain has called for increased labeling requirements on pork sold in the UK. Current guidelines allow for pork products consumed in the UK to be considered as a product of the country in which final processing takes place. The proposed changes would require labeling information regarding animal welfare, production methods, biosecurity and use-by dating.

The FAWC, in its recently released Report on Welfare Labelling, argues that the current requirements are misleading consumers by suggesting that pork products imported into the UK were actually born and raised in the UK following UK welfare standards. According to an article in Farmers Weekly, except for Sweden, the UK has the most "welfare friendly" swine production system in the EU with 35% of UK pigs bred on outdoor units.
