FMD in Ecuador

According to a report filed on May 26th, an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) virus serotype O has been confirmed in cattle located on two farms in Santo Domingo de los Colorados canton, in Pichincha province, Ecuador.

The diagnosis was made by the National Veterinary Laboratory Izquieta Perez using the complement fixation test. The disease has been observed in 16 out of 553 susceptible animals. The source of the outbreak is likely the introduction of infected bulls onto one of the farms from a market in Santo Domingo which is connected to the second farm (approximately 3km away) by a bridle path.

The authorities have implemented control measures including movement controls, ring vaccination and disinfection.
