Position Announcement: Assistant Director, Scientific Activities Division

Do you want to make a difference for the profession? The American Veterinary Medical Association is seeking an Assistant Director for our Scientific Activities Division located at AVMA headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill., a northwest suburb of Chicago. The primary role of this position is to assist in developing and implementing AVMA policy relating to:
- Public health (including zoonotic disease and food safety,
- Regulatory veterinary medicine (including animal disease eradication and control programs), and
- Animal agriculture
In order to develop and implement policy, the Assistant Director provides staff support to assigned councils, committees, and task forces such as the AVMA Council on Public Health and Regulatory Veterinary Medicine, Food Safety Advisory Committee, and Animal Agriculture Liaison Committee. This position liaisons with government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and national veterinary and food animal producer organizations.
The successful candidate must be a veterinarian with at least three years experience and demonstrated scientific knowledge of the areas for which they have responsibility. Advanced training or experience in public health is desirable. Individuals must be able to synthesize information and display strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Interested candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable multi-tasking on a variety of issues. Some travel is required.
