Canadian Swine Producers Implement Animal Tracking
May 10, 2006 —
On May 1st, Saskatchewan swine producers began using a new animal tracking system consisting of slap tattooing market animals with unique numbers assigned to producers as part of a national multi-species identification and traceability system. Producers in Manitoba and Alberta will begin using the system on June 1st.
Slaughter plants in western Canada will record the tattoos in a centralized database thus allowing animal movements to be tracked from the finisher to the packer. The data could be accessed in the event of a foreign animal disease outbreak. The database is currently being developed should be functional by mid to late summer.
