Position Announcement: Swine Production Veterinarian - Ames, Iowa

Seaboard Foods of Iowa has an exciting Swine Production Veterinarian opportunity in our Ames, Iowa office. In this highly impactful role, you will be a key member of the Vet Services team. The Swine Production Veterinarian is responsible for the verification of the health of Seaboard Foods swine herds through direct interaction with company producers and contract growers, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and production practices. Handles health-related farm issues and communicates issues to the appropriate department head. Works directly with the production management team and veterinary services team with diagnostic work, planning health programs, monitoring health, developing systems, maintaining biosecurity programs, medication use, and involvement with governmental regulatory concerns.

Responsibilities

Directs the diagnosis and treatment of clinical swine diseases

  • Assists with any issues involving swine health
  • Works closely with Seaboard Foods production management teams and contract growers
  • Develops and implements health programs and ensures compliance with all governmental and company regulations
  • Interacts with government and industry professionals to monitor diseases of national and international significance
  • Evaluates data based on numbers pulled, total dead, morbidity, and mortality
  • Examines animals to detect and determine the nature of diseases or injuries
  • Collects body tissue, feces, blood, urine, or other bodily fluids for examination and analysis
  • Confers with other team members to resolve animal health issues
  • Collaboratively develops improved processes and the effect of production practices on population health around production management, health management, genetic improvement, and biosecurity
  • Critiques existing programs in an effort to continually improve

Qualifications

Required: The details listed below are the required knowledge, skills, and/or abilities to perform this role. Reasonable accommodation(s) may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree with an emphasis in swine medicine/production required
  • Licensed, or ability to become licensed, to practice veterinary medicine in the states of Iowa
  • 1+ years' experience in swine population health
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment
  • Working knowledge of pork production systems
