Canadian Researchers Evaluate DDGS as Swine Feed Ingredient

Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan and the Prairie Swine Centre are investigating the value of dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) as a feed ingredient in swine rations.

DDGS is a byproduct of the production of ethanol using either corn or wheat. Their research shows that, with wheat, the byproduct, if dried properly, actually contains a higher digestible amino acid content than the wheat used to produce it. The downside is that the dried distillers grain is higher in fiber and could result in a decreased feed intake if the diet is not formulated to maintain daily consumption.

Additional research is needed to further evaluate the resulting carcass quality and growth rates associated with the utilization of DDGS in swine diets according to Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra University of Alberta Feed Industry Research Chair.
