Position Announcement: Herd Veterinarian

The Maschhoffs, LLC seeks a full-time herd veterinarian for Southeast Iowa/West Central Illinois.

Under general supervision, the position serves as a liaison to the operating division and assists the General Manager with implementation of both Health Assurance and production operations. The role collaborates with the internal veterinary team and consulting veterinarians to provide production management personnel with fiscally and socially responsible strategies for managing the health of their animals. The position provides training and development for production personnel, innovation to production practices and good stewardship of the animals and other resources.

Duties and functions

  • Responsible for execution of a system that coordinates routine herd health activities including diagnostic monitoring, herd visit schedules, report management, and protocol distribution and updating.
  • Collaborate with Animal Care and production management to develop animal treatment, processing, and vaccination protocols on the basis of sound scientific Standard Operating Procedures and "return on investment" analysis.
  • Provide training on health and production protocol to a broad spectrum of production and management personnel.
  • Provide tactical "in barn" support of health strategy execution.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and execution of practices and programs that support the business's animal welfare policy and promote societal acceptance
  • Collaborate in the development and execution of health strategies and programs that promote food safety and provide a residue free product to TML customers
  • Work collaboratively with the TML internal veterinary team and a team of consulting veterinarians to develop and implement an annual operating plan.
  • Work cohesively with the members of the Animal Care Team to ensure that the service division provides a comprehensive "best in class" animal care program.
  • Review, advise, and work collaboratively throughout the business to implement bio-security practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education: Degree from an accredited veterinary college (DVM)

Minimum Years of Experience: 0-1 year; Related veterinary college classroom, lab, and intern pig management experience and a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in determined states in which TML has production involvement.

Knowledge of:

  • Veterinary medicine practices, principles and policies
  • Veterinary laws and compliance regulations
  • Pig production and health management
  • Animal welfare

Skilled in:

  • Communicating proficiently, both orally and in writing, and possessing the ability to adapt communication style to match the "readiness level" of the audience.
  • Applying scientific principles and business acumen to decision making processes
  • Working well both independently and in a team environment. Must be a self-starter.

Ability to:

  • Communicate, motivate, and organize projects among a broad spectrum of production and management personnel, frequently under deadline.
  • Handle physical demands of lifting and securing animals
