Marketing Carbon Credits from Canadian Hog Operations

A Canadian pork industry group is in the final stages of developing a tool that will allow Canadian hog farmers to estimate the amount of Greenhouse gas offsets and reductions that can be achieved on hog farms.

The Canadian government is designing a market for the exchange of carbon credits and agriculture is one of the sectors that can participate. However, a methodology needed to be developed to estimate the value of on-farm changes relative to the amount of Greenhouse gas emissions. This tool, which is valid only for specific regions of Canadian hog production, identified 3 areas of production where emission reductions could be achieved: feeding, manure storage and manure application.

By making changes in production practices in these areas, farmers can decrease the amount of Greenhouse gas emissions and then market the carbon credits. The carbon credit trading system should be operational on January 1, 2006.
