Veterinary Public Practice Externship Travel Award

The Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine with the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to announce the availability of funding to support the Veterinary Public Practice Externship Travel Award. The purpose of this competitive travel award is to support the education and training of veterinary students interested in pursuing a career in public health, food safety, epidemiology, or other related fields. Students selected to receive this award will be reimbursed for travel expenses up to $1000. Applications will be reviewed monthly and travel awards will be provided until funds are expended, with generous support from USDA NIFA.

Eligibility:

  1. Veterinary students who are US citizens from any AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine are eligible to apply
  2. Students must be in the 3rd or 4th year of veterinary school when the externship takes place
  3. Students must receive college credit for the externship
  4. Travel must be completed and expenses submitted no later than August 14th, 2023.

Students who receive the award are required to:

  1. Provide receipts of eligible travel expenses (e.g., transportation, lodging, food) within 14 days of completing the externship.
  2. Complete a short on-line evaluation of their experience within 14 days of completing the externship.
  3. Deliver a presentation about their experience to faculty and students at their college within 90 days of completing the externship, or prior to graduation, whichever comes first.

Send the following documents to CPCVM@vt.edu:
  1. A resume that includes your GPA or class rank
  2. A cover letter describing career goals and how this externship will support those career goals
  3. A description of the proposed externship, including location, hosting organization or agency, timeframe, activities, and the learning objectives you hope to achieve. Please also include a statement verifying that you will receive college credit for this experience.

Selection Criteria:

Students will be scored and selected based on the following criteria:
  1. Evidence in resume and cover letter to support interest in a career in public practice
  2. Strength of reasoning and writing quality demonstrated in the cover letter and externship description
  3. Applicability of externship experience to the fields of public health, food safety or epidemiology
