Position Announcement: Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer

The USDA APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories seeks applicants for the position of Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer. This position serves as Laboratory Director of the Diagnostic Bacteriology and Pathology Laboratory of the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, Diagnostics & Biologics of Veterinary Services sharing full responsibility for managing activities and personnel of the laboratory so as to operate within established budgetary and staffing limitations.

Duties

The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishes goals and evaluates proposed and current projects conducted by the various sections.
  • Scientific advisor to the NVSL Director regarding diagnostic bacteriology, molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics, planning projects, solving technical problems, and keeping abreast of new developments
  • Directs diagnostic bacteriology and reference activities for agents such as Mycobacterium, Brucella, Leptospira, Salmonella, and bacterial select agents.
  • Directs diagnostic pathology and reference activities for diseases such as bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis, scrapie, chronic wasting disease, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
  • Ensures the quality assurance for all procedures and products of the lab and provides leadership in support of goals to achieve and maintain ISO 17025 and other ISO accreditation/certification.
  • Organizes and directs diagnostic and reagent support for emergency management.
  • Provides technical consultation to state, university, federal, and other animal disease diagnostic laboratories on a wide variety of topics.

  • Supervising subordinates more than 25% of the time including, but not limited to, recruitment, selecting, appraising, rewarding, addressing performance problems, and fostering an inclusive workplace.
