Classical Swine Fever in South Africa

According to an OIE report dated July 12, 2005, an outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF, or Hog Cholera) has been diagnosed in South Africa. The outbreak, which began on June 13, 2005, was confirmed in two commercial pig farms located in Buffelskraal and Bonne Esperance both in Worcester, Western Cape Province. Quarantines, stamping out and movement controls have been enacted and no vaccine was used. This was the first reported case of CSF in South Africa since 1918. The origin of the infection is unclear.
