Position Announcement: New staff position created at AASV

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces the creation of the position of Director of Communications. The responsibilities of this new position will include the AASV e-Letter, as well as internal and external communications. Internally, the Director will be providing support for AASV committees. Externally, emphasis will placed on maintaining and building liaisons within the swine industry and the veterinary medical profession. A list of qualifications and duties is provided below. AASV Director of Communications

General

  • Experience in swine veterinary medicine
  • Awareness of current issues in the pork industry, animal agriculture and the veterinary medical profession
  • Possess good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • DVM (or equivalent) preferred

AASV e-Letter

Qualifications

  • Proven writing experience
  • Proven ability to write, edit and summarize scientific articles
  • Understand and respect copyright and plagiarism laws
  • Proficient in computer skills such as e-mail and web searching
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Formal training in technical writing may be provided as needed

Duties

  • Provide weekly articles for e-Letter (section editors will review and approve; volume submitted must be sufficient to maintain a publication rate of 6 or more articles per week)
  • Manage a team of writers
  • Collaborate with section editors
  • Access a network of industry contacts and electronic sources to facilitate the collection of information for articles

Communication & Liaison

Provide assistance to the Board of Directors, Officers and Executive Director in the following areas:

  • Internal Communications
    • Coordination of committee efforts
    • Support and facilitate achievement of committee objectives
    • Development of programs, services and products for AASV members
  • External Communications
    • Liaison within the profession and the swine industry
    • Advocacy on regulatory and legislative issues
