Position Announcement: Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) and Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine department at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine is accepting applications for a post-DVM, Postdoctoral Research Associate. This position is in Ames, Iowa, located at the center of swine medicine in the United States. The successful applicant will routinely interact with the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, state and federal animal health agencies, many top twenty-five pork production companies in the U.S., and a wide range of international veterinarians, scientists and producers. The successful applicant will also be involved in clinical instruction of domestic and international veterinary students, applied research focused on swine medicine, and field investigations of disease outbreaks in client herds. The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching, applied research to support SMEC objectives, and clinical practice including field investigations supporting veterinarians and swine producers in the United States. Concurrently, the pursuit of an appropriate graduate degree (M.S. or PhD, as appropriate) and/or specialty board certification is facilitated, and the costs of graduate study may be covered in addition to the provided base salary and benefits.

Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) Postdocs lead field investigations of new diseases, publish new diagnostic techniques, and teach students from 130 countries annually. SMEC is a unique collaboration between the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, AMVC in Audubon, Iowa, and swine medicine stakeholders throughout the United States. The mission of SMEC is to collect and synthesize the best practices for clinical swine medicine and to translate and disseminate those practices to stakeholders who can apply them to improve swine health, ensure pork safety, maintain sustainability, and conserve resources.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an AVMA accredited veterinary college by June 1, 2022
  • Eligible for State of Iowa Veterinary Licensure on or before the first day of employment
  • Eligible for Category II Veterinary Accreditation under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program on or before the first day of employment
  • Have and maintain a valid U.S. state driver's license and the ability to be authorized to drive University vehicles on or before the first day of employment
  • Demonstrated focus on swine veterinary medicine

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience practicing swine veterinary medicine

  • January 31, 2022 - or as soon as possible.

Proposed End Date or Length of Term:

  • January 31, 2023
