Position Announcement: Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer

As a Supervisory Veterinary Medical Officer at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, you will provide a complete laboratory service of diagnosis, training, and applied research in viral diseases to Veterinary Services and the livestock industry.

Responsibilities

The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assigns and reviews the work of staff to ensure timely performance, soundness, and value.
  • Selects, modifies, and supervises the application of serologic techniques for the detection of antibody proteins in the serums of diseased animals.
  • Develops standard protocols, provides training, certifies proficiency, supervises the examination of check tests, and recommends the removal of unsatisfactory laboratories.
  • Provides consultation to veterinarians in the field concerning herds affected with virus diseases, makes trips to laboratories in the United States or internationally for training and problem solving.
  • Develops and supervises difficult and complex virology techniques not available in other laboratories for detection of unusual viral diseases.
  • Recognize laboratory and field needs of APHIS and provide information and guidance in solving problems by appropriate recommendations and well-designed experiments.
  • Conducts and participates in training schools and seminars by giving lectures and demonstrations and conducting discussion groups.

Education

BASIC REQUIREMENT: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA).
