Get to Know Your AASV District Director – Melissa Billing

Elected in the spring of 2018, Dr. Melissa Billing represents members from 14 Northeastern U.S. states as the District 1 AASV Director.

With a major in biology and minor in chemistry, Melissa graduated from Wilmington College of Ohio in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science. Dr. Billing graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. In 2016, she completed the Executive Veterinary Program (EVP) in Swine Health Management at the University of Illinois.

As a Swine Professional Service Veterinarian (PSV) at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health (BIAH) USA, Inc., Dr. Billing assists veterinarians and swine producers throughout the eastern United States on topics including BIAH swine vaccines, custom made vaccines, disease challenges, disease prevention, biosecurity, food safety, and swine production.

Dr. Billing has been an AASV member since joining as a student in 2002. Since 2017, she has served the organization as Chair of the Operation Main Street Committee. In fact, Dr. Billing became interested in serving AASV as a District Director through her role as a committee chair when she attended the committee leaders and Board of Directors fall meeting.

During that meeting, "I realized that the Board of Directors was made up of a group of great people that were all very down to earth. I was impressed by the way that they carry out the mission of the organization. I learned I wanted to get more involved!"

Dr. Billing's advice to other members? "Get involved! Join an AASV committee and it could lead to something more!"

In the future she hopes to see AASV continue to enhance the knowledge of swine veterinarians and the swine industry.

Outside of work, Dr. Billing enjoys spending time with her husband, Steve, and their two daughters, Rose, age 12, and Teagen, age 9.
