Iowa State University and the University of Minnesota are enrolling herds in two PRRS projects.

PRRS Outbreak Management Program

It has been 10 years since we launched the original time to stability/time to baseline productivity (TTS/TTBP) project. Now there are better diagnostic monitoring tools, new tools for epidemiological research, and a more collaborative industry. Thus, we are conducting a project entitled "PRRS outbreak management program (POMP)". This is an epidemiological study with the objective to track & benchmark the aspects and practices implemented in breeding herds following PRRS outbreak. PRRSV Whole Genome Sequencing and Time to Stability Field Project

It has been proposed that PRRSV genetic variability may play an important role on time to stability (TTS) in breeding herds undergoing PRRSV elimination. As whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of PRRSV is becoming available, we believe this tool can help measuring viral genetic variability especially when multiple strains are involved. Thus, the objective of this project is to assess the effect of whole-PRRSV genetic variability on time-to-stability in breeding herds undergoing PRRSV elimination.

This is a NPB-funded project to cover PRRSV whole genome sequencing, and capture data to better understand the effect of whole-PRRSV genetic variability on time-to-stability in breeding herds undergoing PRRSV elimination. In this project, WGS will be performed on processing fluid (PF) samples, and PRRS genetic diversity compared among samples from farms with 'quick TTS', defined as reaching TTS within 30 weeks, and 'delayed TTS' defined as herds not achieving TTS by 40 weeks after implementing strategies such as load-close-expose. We plan to enroll 40 breeding herds, with the expectation that approximately 10 herds will fall into the 'quick TTS' group, and 10 herds into the 'delayed TTS' group.
