Seaboard Foods, an integrated pork production company (100% swine), www.seaboardfoods.com, is offering paid/stipend 8-12 week summer internships to 1st-3rd year veterinary students. Housing may be available. Application deadline is January 31.

Description:

The Seaboard Foods veterinary internship gives veterinary students insight and experience in production herd health. The veterinary internship will provide hands-on and technical training in veterinary practices, including bleeding, necropsy, full tissue work-ups, differential diagnostic lists, developing action and treatment plans, conducting veterinary and health audits, collecting samples, and managing other health concerns as they arise. The veterinary internship may require several mini-projects as assigned by the veterinary staff throughout the summer. This internship is for students currently in veterinary school only. Pre-veterinary students will not be considered. If you are a current second- or third-year student in veterinary school interested in production and large animal veterinary medicine, apply today! The internship is approximately ten (10) weeks and is in Guymon, Oklahoma.

AASV Project:

Not required; based on topic and student interest. Student will work on mini-projects throughout the summer and report their findings to the applicable stakeholders and management team members.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrating a working knowledge of swine anatomy.
  • Demonstrating ability to learn and perform technical veterinarian skills, such as bleeding, necropsy, collecting a full set of tissue for diagnostic samples, creating differential diagnostic lists, determining treatments, and other tasks as determined by the veterinary staff.
  • Learning and putting into practice Seaboard Foods' vaccination programs and euthanasia procedures and utilizing case logs.
  • Understanding and following the company biosecurity policies.
  • Working directly with and learning from members of the veterinary staff to determine and develop an applicable mini-project that will benefit both the student and the company.
  • Identifying a faculty member mentor to serve as a reference and liaison between the company and the university.

Details:

  • Length: Minimum of 8 weeks; maximum of 12 weeks
  • Stipend: $560/week
  • Housing: Provided with paid utilities
  • Daily Transportation: Daily transportation is the student's responsibility. Student will be reimbursed for mileage when traveling outside of the designated internship area
  • Meals: Student is responsible for his/her own meals. Meal costs will be reimbursed when student is traveling outside of the designated internship area.
  • Eligibility: 1st - 3rd year veterinary students
