Emergency Preparedness and Response Training Opportunity: African Swine Fever – China Experience

Webinar: September 17, 2019, 11 AM EST

Purpose/Objective: Dr. Richard French is the Head of the Health Management Center for Boehringer Ingelheim in Shanghai, China. Dr. French will discuss his experience during the outbreaks in China. Up until September 2019, China lead the world in pork production, exceeding all other countries, combined, in total market hog numbers, producing over 60% of the world's pork. As of September 1st, 2019, China admits African swine fever is now endemic across the country and ranks somewhere between 3rd and 4th in the world with loss of over 300,000,000 market hogs and 50-70% of sow numbers. It is unclear where the actual numbers are because nobody really knows the truth nor reports disease and losses. In August of 2018, African swine fever (ASF) was reported in China. In less than a year, the entire country has encountered the disease and the virus is detected in everything from animal feed to human food and every part of the swine food chain. And, in less than a year, the largest poorly regulated experimental study with use of not one, but multiple vaccines, is already in field trials across the country.
