SHIC Domestic Disease Monitoring Report Highlights Increased PRRS Cases

The highest number of porcine reproductive and respiratory (PRRS) PCR cases reported in a single month in the US occurred in October. With more than 6000 cases documented, evaluators believe this could signal the beginning of the PRRS season for winter 2018-2019. This, and other near real-time swine disease information, is included in the Swine Health Information Center's November Domestic Disease Monitoring Report.

Also included in the November report are details on detection of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) by PCR, porcine deltacoronavirus PCR testing, porcine corona virus 2, and PSV. Two cases of pestivirus (Shaker Pig Syndrome) were reported and the association of influenza A virus and S. suis in respiratory tissues was found to be more frequent this year than previous. L. intracellularis and Salmonellas had increased frequency of detection in fall seasons over the recent years. Additionally, coccidia (COCC) continues to be a frequently detected agent. All COCC cases were diagnosed as enteritis. Read the entire report here for full details on domestic swine disease activity, with information presented to assist practitioners and pork producers with safeguarding herd health.

Funded by America's pork producers to protect and enhance the health of the US swine herd, SHIC focuses its efforts on prevention, preparedness, and response.
