2018 ISU James D. McKean Swine Disease Conference

The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the Iowa Pork Industry Center, The Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV), District 6, sponsor the ISU James D. McKean Swine Disease Conference. The conference was renamed in 2015 after the death of longtime conference chair, Dr. James D. McKean, and was previously known as the Annual Swine Disease Conference for Swine Practitioners. The conference will be held at the Scheman Building, in Ames, Iowa, on November 1-2, 2018.

The program is designed to answer daily concerns of swine practitioners.

This year's conference will cover a myriad of topics related to swine health. We will have an update of African Swine Fever from both the European and Asian perspectives as well as a look at modeling data related the potential of imported feed ingredients carrying a foreign animal disease. We will have updates on novel techniques for PRRS surveillance in lower prevalence herds at the end of closures, PRRS epidemiology, PRRS resilience in breeding herds, and batch farrowing for disease control. We will have a panel discussing prioritization of biosecurity investments as well as feed mitigation strategies and a look at how other countries are dealing with transport biosecurity. The second day will be an update on an increase in PCV3 including case reports, impact of Influenza vaccination, PEDV shedding data, and an update on a nationwide survey looking at risk factors for pelvic organ prolapses.

We are also pleased to announce that we will again be holding 3 pre-conference workshops on the Wednesday afternoon prior to the beginning of the main conference, October 31, 2018. These workshops will cover African Swine Fever, Disease Surveillance, and Interactive Influenza A Virus topics.
