Position Announcement: Assistant Director, DVM

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) and the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine (VCM) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are seeking an Assistant Director, DVM (DAR http://research.illinois.edu/regulatory-compliance-safety/dar) (90%) to provide support in the daily operation of the veterinary care program and the facility management of laboratory animal facilities maintained in the DAR and as a Clinical Track Assistant Professor (10%) to assist in the delivery of the professional veterinary curriculum in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) (http://vetmed.illinois.edu).

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Assistant Director (DAR/OVCR) 90%:

  • Provide administrative support to the Associate Director(s) and Director.
  • Provide direct supervision of veterinary technicians and animal facility supervisors.
  • Provide indirect supervision of civil service staff.
  • Provide oversight of satellite facilities.
  • Provide clinical and preventive care of research animals, including emergency care (weekend, after hours, and holidays).
  • Serve on IACUC if required, participate in protocol review, semiannual inspections, program reviews, policy revisions and post approval monitoring.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive intramural training/educational programs for faculty, staff and students utilizing animals in research, teaching and/or testing.
  • Manage facilities, equipment and other required resources to provide animal care and research support.
  • Consult with researchers and research staff on veterinary care, animal-related issues and regulatory issues.
  • Teach veterinary students during formal class sessions or supervised rotations within the department.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory animal facilities.
  • Assists in development of animal care policy and procedure to meet program objectives. Assess staffing needs, write job justifications, conduct performance reviews, discipline employees, conduct job interviews, perform reference checks, and make hiring decisions.
  • Review biosafety protocols and participate in biosafety audits. Provide technical support, teaching, and training to researchers and their laboratory staff.
  • Serve on campus or external committees as required.
  • Provide administrative support in the absence of the DAR Director and/or Associate Director, DVM.

Specialized Faculty (VCM) 10%, for a non-tenured Clinical Assistant Professor:

The successful candidate will actively participate in professional veterinary curriculum within VCM. In cooperation with faculty and staff of VCM, will focus on teaching, clinical service, and scholarship. Work in concert with VCM faculty to deliver a consistent and meaningful experience for the laboratory animal medicine rotation students. Will be expected to maintain knowledge, expertise and clinical skills that are appropriate for clinician in relevant field.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A DVM degree or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school.
  • Minimum of two years clinical experience.
  • Completion of an ACLAM recognized training program in laboratory animal medicine or equivalent experience.
  • Current license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.
  • Ability to foster constructive relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students and other constituencies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws relating to the use of animals in research and teaching.
  • Good organizational skills.

Preferred:

ACLAM Diplomate status.

Position Details

Proposed start date: Negotiable.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment Status: Regular 90% academic professional appointment, 10% non-tenure track specialized faculty/12-month service basis. Benefit-eligible position.
