AASV Leadership Transition Plan Announcement

AASV's Executive Director, Dr. Tom Burkgren, has announced his intention to retire in May, 2019. He has made this announcement a year in advance to help provide a positive and smooth transition of leadership for the organization. The twelve month period will give AASV ample time to appoint a new Executive Director and then provide an overlap period to support bringing that person into the Executive Director role.

Dr. Burkgren has served as AASV's Executive Director for 25 years. We all thank him for his past and continued leadership and professionalism in moving AASV in positive directions. Dr. Burkgren has been and will continue to be a strong advocate for our organization and profession in the larger veterinary medicine community.

The search process for the next Executive Director is underway. Our board of directors has assembled a six member executive search committee representing a cross section of AASV membership and interests. The committee members are Drs: Bill Hollis; Deborah Murray; Megan Potter; Max Rodibaugh; Pete Thomas; and committee chair Dr. Scanlon Daniels. Work of the committee is being supported by a non-voting, external consultant.

The committee is following a detailed plan of activities. Members are currently developing requirements and qualification details for the Executive Director role. The position will be posted for review and applications in early June. Periodic updates on activities will be provided through this newsletter.

Please thank Dr. Burkgren and congratulate him on his future retirement plans. AASV, through the work for this Executive Director search, is committing to continue providing value to its membership and the profession in the future. Please support Dr. Burkgren and the search committee activities in the coming months.
