Position Announcement: Director of Animal Welfare

The National Pork Board in Clive, IA, is seeking a dynamic person to become our Director of Animal Welfare within our Science and Technology Department. This person is responsible for assisting in the implementation of animal welfare and welfare-related programs. The Director of Animal Welfare will report directly to and work most closely with the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Animal Welfare. The essential job functions for this Director will include: Oversight of animal care content and coordination of Science and Technology Department information for National Pork Board's certification programs: Pork Quality Assurance Plus® (PQA Plus®) and the Transport Quality Assurance™ (TQA™) program. The Director will work closely with the AVP of Sustainability and will assist with facilitation of the We Care programming. In addition, the Director will work collaboratively with the Director of Certification Programs and with other program areas and departments to manage and assure quality of aggregated industry PQA Plus Site Assessment data. The Director will facilitate the implementation of the Common Swine Industry Audit (CSIA) and will be the primary staff person assigned to the CSIA Task Force. The Director will participate in the development and delivery of educational material for producers and veterinarians in the animal welfare area and will provide technical advice with respect to animal welfare and welfare-related issues.

Candidates must possess the ability to communicate orally and in written form with producers, veterinarians, and other diverse professionals; must be able to translate animal welfare research and situations for producers and other audiences; must be familiar with the food chain from farmer to packer/processor to retail food companies. A minimum of 5 years' experience in a pork production setting or equivalent experience incorporated in an advanced degree program. Applicants should have a proven track-record of strong project management skills.

A BS or MS degree in animal science, animal physiology or a closely related field with emphasis on animal welfare is required. A DVM with experience in animal welfare is also acceptable. PhD in animal science, animal physiology or a closely related field with emphasis on animal welfare preferred.

This position may require up to 40% travel by both air and auto and requires a valid driver's license, good driving record and a valid passport.

The National Pork Board has responsibility for Checkoff-funded research, promotion and consumer information projects and for communicating with pork producers and the public. The Pork Checkoff funds national and state programs in advertising, consumer information, retail and foodservice marketing, export market promotion, production improvement, technology, swine health, pork safety and environmental management.
