Position Announcement: Assistant Vice President of Animal Welfare

The National Pork Board in Clive, Iowa, is seeking a dynamic person to become our Assistant Vice President of Animal Welfare within our Science and Technology Department. This person will be responsible for developing and implementing animal welfare and welfare-related programs. The essential job functions for this position include: the development and delivery of animal welfare educational materials and technical advice for producers, veterinarians, packer/producers, retail customers, food service customers, government officials, allied industry, and consumers. The AVP will work cross departmentally with NPB staff in the areas of communication, producer services, social responsibility, and marketing to provide technical advice with respect to animal welfare and welfare-related issues. The Assistant Vice President has supervisory responsibilities for the Manager of Animal Welfare.

Candidates must possess the ability to communicate orally and in written form with producers, veterinarians, and other diverse professionals; must be able to translate animal welfare research and situations for producers and other audiences; must be familiar with the food chain from farmer to packer/processor to retail food companies. A minimum of 5 years' experience in a pork production setting or equivalent experience incorporated in an advanced degree program. Applicants should have a proven track record of strong project management skills.

MS or PhD degree in animal science, animal physiology or a closely related field with emphasis on animal welfare. A DVM with experience in animal welfare is also acceptable.

This position may require up to 35% domestic travel by both air and auto and requires a valid driver's license and good driving record.

The National Pork Board has responsibility for Checkoff-funded research, promotion and consumer information projects and for communicating with pork producers and the public. The Pork Checkoff funds national and state programs in advertising, consumer information, retail and foodservice marketing, export market promotion, production improvement, technology, swine health, pork safety and environmental management.
