Acord, Zack Honored at USAHA

The United States Animal Health Association (USAHA) recently wrapped up its 121st Annual Meeting in San Diego, welcoming nearly 1300 individuals from around the country and abroad to address key issues in animal health. The meeting is a joint event with the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, held each fall. Highlighting the event was the presentation of several awards during the Joint President's Dinner, on Sunday, October 15.

Medal of Distinction

The USAHA Medal of Distinction was presented to Mr. Bobby Acord, former APHIS Administrator and current advisor to many agriculture organizations. Acord was recognized for his leadership covering a number of areas, most notably the partnerships developed with USAHA and its membership. Acord spent a long career in federal service,working his way up to the top of APHIS leadership, touching many lives and making a positive impact for animal health, both in the wildlife and agriculture sectors. The Medal of Distinction is the top honor given to a USAHA member, for contributions and leadership to the organization.

Federal Partnership Award

Dr. Jon Zack was awarded the Federal Partnership Award, which USAHA recognizes a government employee for their efforts in advancing key initiatives in the U.S. Zack was honored for his work in emergency preparedness, which has been a high priority among stakeholders in recent years. Zack is the Director, National Preparedness and Incident Coordination Center for USDA, APHIS, Veterinary Services.

Other awards were also featured during the event, which proved a great evening in recognizing some of animal health's finest leaders.

The APHIS Administrator Award was presented to Dr. Bruce Akey, of the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory.

The National Assembly Award was given to Dr. Kent Fowler, Animal Health Branch Chief for the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

AAVLD Awards included:

  • E.P. Pope Award - Dr. Lanny Pace, Mississippi State University
  • Distinguished Service Award - Dr. Matti Kiupel, Michigan State University
  • Lifetime Membership Award - Dr. Terry McElwain, Washington State University

The event was presided over by USAHA President Boyd Parr and AAVLD President Pat Halbur.
